What are we currently working on?

  • Becoming a legally registered organisation

    • For many years Intersect has been operating without being registered as a non profit organisation. While this has not hindered our activities, it has presented some challenges and we’ve decided to change that!

  • Period Poverty Advocacy

    • A collaboration with Youth Today and H.E.R (Humanity.Empowerment.Respect) for a campaign on period poverty. Period poverty affects people who menstruate and who don’t have access to sanitary products and safe and hygienic places to use them. People who don’t have access to sanitary products often resort to using unsafe methods to stem the flow of menstrual blood.

  • LGBTQIA+ Outreach Advocacy

    • Intersect will be ramping up its outreach to the LGBTQIA+ community in Antigua and Barbuda to center and amplify their voices around core, longterm issues that include decriminalization, cultural and systemic change, access to a range of social safety nets, and the co-creation of knowledge about their experiences with our Queeribbean team and queer communities around the country.

  • Legislative reform advocacy

    • Following the April 2018 ruling by the High Court of Justice in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and in Belize, where both judges deemed the “buggery” laws in the Sexual Offences Act violated constitutional rights to dignity, privacy, equality and freedom, Intersect has set its sights on bringing a similar case in Antigua and Barbuda. We believe that the buggery laws, in addition to criminalizing queer people, legitimize a culture of hate and ignorance in Antigua and Barbuda. Decriminalizing queerness, within and beyond the legislation, to effect transformative socio-cultural change, is an ongoing goal of our collective.
